Internet of Good Things (IoGT) Update 2023

In 2023, there was a reduction in new software and infrastructure development and an increase in continuity and maintenance tasks as we neared end of contract in November. Five new sites were created, including one (supply.goodinternet.org) to gather feedback on Inter-Agency Health Kits, which contributed to the responses to the Turkey/Syria earthquake and the crisis in Gaza.

The most time-consuming task was the migration of the web analytics infrastructure from Google Analytics to Matomo due to the combination of the requirements to support devices with no JavaScript capability and “free data” agreements and needing to coordinate with UNICEF’s internal IT team, which was rather stretched. At the time of writing the migration is considered to be complete, with IDEMS being instrumental in achieving a successful result.

Moving from Google Analytics to Matomo means that UNICEF is in full control of its web analytics data from IoGT sites, with each site owner having their own account and access to data for their site only.

In 2024, IDEMS’s involvement in IoGT is likely to continue to be restricted to ongoing support and maintenance. UNICEF intends to continue development of IoGT under a new agreement within the next nine months, but it’s not clear whether IDEMS or a different organisation will take up the new agreement. We anticipate that future tasks will include keeping the software and infrastructure up-to-date and operating efficiently, and potentially a handover to whoever takes on the next development contract.
