Now in Prototype: Open, Adaptive Statistics & Data Science Textbooks

We have launched a new website introducing our work on Open, Adaptive Statistics & Data Science Textbooks. The project brings together existing open textbooks and educational resources into a shared library, with the aim of making high-quality teaching materials easier to access, adapt, and reuse. We are now inviting a small community of professors and lecturers to join us in exploring and developing the approach.

Much of this work builds on PreTeXt, an open-source publishing system that allows textbooks to be developed as structured content rather than fixed documents. We have been converting existing open statistics and data science textbooks into this format, creating a growing library of resources that can be adapted for different teaching contexts.

Our longer-term aim is to make it easier for educators to create their own variants of textbooks, changing items in it easily – such as examples, datasets, software, or assessments to suit their students, without having to start from scratch. Importantly, these adaptations can remain connected to the original resources, allowing improvements made in one context to benefit others.

The new website introduces this vision and the prototype we are developing, alongside opportunities for educators and authors to get involved.
